Most young girls do progress "from crayons to perfume." It is a nice way to go. That is a phrase Lulu sings in "To Sir With Love," the title song in a fine, perceptive film that begins with tension, biting nails, embarrassment, awe, telling tales and schoolgirl days of astonishment and emerges — with a sense of appreciation — to hair curlers, young womanhood and a deep measure of maturity.
The film and Lulu's singing are both big, bright, blooming hits. Lulu, who is the latest British musical "phenom," appears as a Cockney kid in a tough East End school in London. She sings the title song under the credits.
Remember "Shout" and "Satisfied"? They were Lulu's earlier hits. Now with "To Sir With Love" and "The Boat That I Row," concurrently on Top-Ten charts; the progress to "perfume" and popularity continues.
There is a wonderful collection of material included in this album. Neil Diamond wrote "The Boat That I Row." "Day Tripper," of course, is the Lennon-McCartney tune. "To Sir With Love" was written by Don Black and Mark London. They also wrote the delightful "Best Of Both Worlds" and Mark did "You and I" by himself.
Lulu has progressed "from crayons to perfume" excitingly. She's a red-headed song-stylist who has a feel for "soul," deep expression, and a personal commitment to the meaning of a lyric. She turns an idea into an image. Lulu sings "To Sir With Love." Her skirts are mini. Her talent is maximum.
