CompactFlash Association Specification Revision Increases Data Transfer Rates

Palo Alto, CA — The CompactFlash Association (CFA) announced the CF+ and CompactFlash Specification Revision 3.0, which increases the CF interface data transfer rate from l6MB/sec. to 66MB/sec., while maintaining forward and backward compatibility with old and new host systems.

Flash chip and controller technology advances have allowed flash chips to achieve sustained data transfer rates of over 12MB/sec. The development of the 66MB/sec. interface means that the CompactFlash interface will not restrict the sustained data transfer rate of CompactFlash cards in the near future. Faster PCMCIA ATA memory and I/O modes have also been added and can provide interface transfer rates up to 25MB/sec.

There is another issue that limits the usable size of CompactFlash cards. Currently the FAT 16 file system is used for cards up to 2.2GB. To use the full capacity of cards over 2.2GB capacity, the FAT32 file system is necessary. The CFA is currently recommending that systems be designed to be compatible with FAT 12, FAT 16 and FAT32 file systems in order to be able to use the full-capacity range of CompactFlash cards currently offered.

Shipping CompactFlash card capacities have reached 12GB, and 4GB Hitachi Microdrives are shipping, while Seagate has announced a 5GB CF+ drive. VGA, Ethernet, modem, serial, parallel, digital phone, GSM, Bluetooth and Ethernet wireless cards are all available.

The CF+ and CompactFlash standard was developed to ensure that today and tomorrows digital cameras will be compatible with even higher capacity CF cards as they become available.

The Compac flash card experience I’ve had thusfar is good, they are reliable and show no indications of problems.

I must say this though, the 2X speed cards are pigs on speed for any device I’ve used, the 4X are good for devices that have internal memory and use buffering to transfer pictures, movies and/or other files.

You can tell if your device has internal buffering typically by reviewing the specs, if the specs indicate something like 128 Meg “built in” and expandable SdRam(XD), CF card slot etc then you can be somewhat certain that the unit is using buffering, this is of course not a %100 Guarentee, do some shopping to insure this.

Beware of devices such as Digital Voice recorders, music players, cameras and other devices that you may require High Speed access too, speed can cripple your operation especial in movie and picture devices

If you already own a device (like I do) that does not have buffering you can immediatly tell by taking the External Memory card out of the device and turning the device on, if you cannot take pictures, record voice or get a “insert memory card” message or picture then you have a device that reuires high speed cards.
