Rice Stemmed Point Elk River, NE Oklahoma This replica of a rice contracting stemmed point was found at a site along the Elk River in Northeast Oklahoma in the headwaters of Grand Lake. It is a chipped stone contracting stemmed form with shoulders but no barbs. It was named at the Rice Site in Stone County, Missouri and is thought to date from *1000-7000 B.C. It is considered to be Early Arhaic but may continue into the Middle Archaic in the Ozarks. During the Early Archaic in the Ozarks, the big-game hunting emphasis was replaced with diversified expectation of the environment. The artifacts indicate additional emphasis on collecting nuts, berries, seeds and fruits. In addition to large game, small game was sought for food. The contracting stemmed forms of the Early Archaic must have developed froia early toolmaking practices of those who fluted the early forms.
